This story started as a dream.

I thought I couldn't remember the ending of my favorite childhood book. Turns out I hadn't read it before because the book didn't actually exist. It took me thirty-five years to read the story.

First, I had to write it!

I needed a story like this. I've wished for happy endings that weren't solved with princes and picket fences. Rebel journeys. Where something happens that isn't your fault but becomes your problem anyway.

Growing up feels like a series of shattered illusions. Stories help turn the pieces into a pattern that makes sense of it all.

This is a story of learning to shine in impossible darkness.

Like Yazia, I move fast. So I didn't want to wait for a traditional publisher or to raise money for the perfect illustrator.

I wanted to serve it fresh and hot, exactly as it had poured out of me.
